World´s longest escalator Hong Kong

longest escalator

January 22, 2016

Jou San! (Good morning in Cantonese) Today we discovered the world´s longest outdoor escalator Hong Kong, which is located right in the Central district of the city! Built by the French (@NickHalliwell_ you guessed it!) company Constructions Industrielle de la Méditerranée in 1993, this crazy escalator runs 800 meters (2,600ft) and elevates 135 meters (443 ft) in order to move pedestrian traffic from the Central and Western districts of Hong Kong Island to the Mid-Levels.

Throughout this 18 minute scope, we got easily distracted and made several stops along the way to show my Periscope family the backstreets, shops, cafes, sights and sounds of the Hong Kong Central district viewed from the various landing platforms of the escalator. You got to see the hustle and bustle of the lunch time crowd heading out of their offices with grumbling bellies.

An interesting fact about the longest escalator in the world in Hong Kong is that everyday it runs downhill starting at 6:00am until 10:00am and then switches directions and runs uphill from 10:00am until midnight. The total traffic time is about 20 minutes, but you can walk it to shorten your travel time.

The longest escalator is actually a Hong Kong attraction that many tourists like to visit and experience. It was originally built in hopes of alleviating traffic congestion in the Central and Sheung Wan districts. Unfortunately, still 23 years after its inception, traffic is still congested in the area. Not what was expected after this US$30 million project.
